In 2002 (the summer before my sophomore year at TCU), I bought this truck at a sort of “less than upscale” car lot in Paducah, KY. It had approximately 80,000 miles on it when I purchased it. The body was in okay condition and it didn’t even have a CD Player. I only expected it to get me through college.
Well today, after 3 aftermarket CD Players, 100,000 miles, countless oil changes, multiple sets of tires, a new radiator, lots of new sensors, two sets of brakes, a ton of gas (it only got about 16 miles to the gallon), getting married, 3 moves across the country, 4 campaigns and 9.5 years. I had to get rid of my old friend.
This past week the truck went to the mechanic for a check up and some routine maintenance. After two full days at the shop I was informed rather somberly that the truck needed $1800 worth of work. Kelly Blue Book told me it was only worth about $1000. While the news wasn’t all that unexpected, I was sad the day had finally come. So today, I sold the truck at Carmax in East Fort Worth.
Hopefully, it will get fixed up and resold to someone who will use it for another 11 years. If not, I feel like a truck that was originally manufactured in 1996 had a good run. I can only hope the next car I purchase will last as long and be just as dependable.
Goodbye Old Friend.
